The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley announces the beginning of its Documentation Project. This project will record the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and allied (LGBTA) community of the greater Rochester area.
Phase One of this project, which will span March – August 2010, will focus on locating, identifying, surveying and preserving community records from individual and organizational collections in order to document the history and experiences of LGBTA people who have lived within Monroe County.
The LGBTA Community of Rochester, NY Documentation Project was made possible in part by a grant from the Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) of the New York State Archives, a program of the State Education Department.
The Gay Alliance wants to be certain that the work and efforts of LGBTA groups and individuals survive and are recognized as part of New York State’s rich cultural, political, social and economic history. The records will document the existence and impact of LGBTA people on Rochester and the Genesee Valley region.
If you are an individual or organization with historical records that may be pertinent to the history of the Rochester LGBTA community, please contact Nicole Menarchem at 585-244-8640, ext 32 or NicoleM@gayalliance.org.
