Historical Note:
The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley’s Anti-Violence Program is the local chapter of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP). The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Program works to prevent, respond to, and end all forms of violence against and within the LBGTQ communities.[1] The Anti-Violence Program at the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley is a community safety program that provides specialized services for victims of anti-LGBTQ bias and hate violence, domestic violence, HIV related violence, rape, and sexual assault as well as services for family and friends of those murdered in anti-LBGTQ hate crimes or as a result of domestic violence. Services for those affected by crime include crisis intervention, peer counseling, and advocacy with police, courts, and other areas of the justice system. It also includes access to medical, criminal justice personnel, mental health, and social service providers, local city and state representatives and others. The Community Safety team works within and beyond the LGBTQ community providing community organizing, training, education, outreach and advocacy with local and state agencies to address inadequacies or gaps in laws and services for LBGTQ people[2].
Scope and Content Note:
The records include completed incident reporting forms, case intake forms, police reports, photos, and orders of protection. The records also include monthly summaries of violence demographics and types of violence. In some case files there are court rulings, media reports, and hand written notes regarding the case files. The records are confidential as no victim names have been removed. All identifying information remains. Some of the folders are color coded by type of incident:
Yellow – domestic violence
Purple – bias/hate violence
Grey – non-crime/non-violence
Blue – crime/non-bias
Orange – bias/non-crime
Green – sexual assault
Red – police misconduct
Topics covered include hate crimes, domestic violence, police misconduct, and sexual assault.
Intake forms from 2007-2008 do not have case numbers.
The records were transferred to the Archives in folders in a somewhat chronological order. The present arrangement of files was created by the Archival Consultant. In the future, the records will need to have the staples and paperclips removed and be placed into acid free folders for preservation.
Arrangement:
Resources are arranged chronologically.
